With more than 10 years of experience in the translation and localization industry, Uwe Muegge manages the terminology program at Medtronic, the world's largest manufacturer of medical technology. He is responsible for the strategic direction of the terminology program and the implementation of terminology support for authors as well as internal and external translators. In addition, Uwe Muegge manages the machine translation program at Medtronic and provides consulting services on translation technology.
His personal website www.muegge.cc is a unique showcase of the power of machine translation when combined with controlled language: The whole website can be translated automatically into twelve languages at the click of the mouse. Not only has this website attracted visitors from more than 120 countries, www.muegge.cc is also included in the prestigious 'Best of the Web' directory. Uwe Muegge is the author of the book "Translation Contract: A Standards-Based Model Solution" and numerous articles on translation automation. He has given presentations at a number of international conferences, including Localization World, tcworld, Translating and the Computer, and teaches Advanced Computer-Assisted Translation and Terminology Management at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, the leading translator training institution in the United States.
Prior to Medtronic, Uwe Muegge worked in the translation department of J.D. Edwards, a supplier of enterprise software solutions, where he developed an approach to machine translation that does not require authors to write in a controlled language. He was also involved in a development effort for a multilingual knowledgebase centered around machine translation, and he implemented a vendor evaluation program based on the SAE J2450 standard.
From 1996 to 2002, Uwe Muegge worked as an independent translation consultant and freelance copywriter in Germany. He managed all aspects of major translation projects from the selection of vendors, to terminology work (using the TERMinator, his proprietary automatic terminology extraction tool), to automatic quality assurance. Uwe Muegge provided translation and terminology consulting services to large global enterprises such as Daimler, SAP, and Sun Microsystems.
In 2001, Uwe Muegge developed the curriculum and teaching environment for a post-graduate course in Translation Management and Terminology, which he gave at Internationales Hochschulinstitut, Lindau, Germany. Uwe Muegge is currently involved in the development of a curriculum for a localization certificate program at the University of Washington, Seattle.

Uwe Muegge is also a trained photographer. His “Keepers of the Light" project was sponsored by the United States Information Service and went on exhibit in a number of cities in Germany; his multimedia project “Adrift in the Southwest” was sponsored and produced by Philip Morris International.
He has crossed the Alps on foot on the 425 mile (685 km) GR5 route from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean Sea, walked the 268 mile (429 km) Pennine Way in the UK and the northern part of the Kungsleden in Sweden, participated in the Inferno Race (the oldest and one of the longest downhill ski races in the world) in Switzerland, completed several Olympic-distance triathlons, and his marathon best is 3:34h.
Uwe Muegge holds a BA equivalent in English Linguistics from the University of Tuebingen, Germany, an MA in Telecommunication and Film from the University of Oregon and an MA in German Translation from the Monterey Institute of International Studies. He has also pursued doctoral studies in Applied Linguistics at the University of Leipzig, Germany.
