Biography

Since his discovery in the 1980s, Bernard Faucon has come to be one of the most celebrated and widely influential artists in contemporary photography. Over the past three decades, Bernard Faucon’s work has appeared in more than 300 individual and group exhibitions at museums and art galleries throughout Western Europe, the United States, and Japan. Bernard Faucon’s work has appeared frequently at Léo Castelli in New York and at Agathe Gaillard and Yvon Lambert in Paris. Known for his poetic imagery, Bernard Faucon is one of the foremost practitioners of “mise en scene” photography. Focused on creating unique and dreamlike tableaux, Bernard Faucon often utilized mannequins in his early work to imitate scenes of a romanticized and idyllic childhood. After 1981, Bernard Faucon strayed from the use of mannequins in his work to focus on atmospheric images of nature and interior spaces. Bernard Faucon’s unique style has influenced the work of countless classical and modern artists, authors, film and stage directors, psychoanalysts, and Japanese fashion designers. In 2006, the first complete Retrospective of Bernard Faucon’s work was shown at Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris. Concurrent to his Retrospective, Bernard Faucon released his “Catalogue raisonné,” which comprises his entire body of work. Additional collections of Bernard Faucon’s work have been published in French, English, Japanese, and Korean. Most of these earlier collections are now out of print and are considered a rarity among collectors. In 1999, Bernard Faucon published his first book containing only text, “La peur du voyage.” Born in Provence, France in 1950, Bernard Faucon studied at Lycée d'Apt as a young man. Bernard Faucon later attended the Sorbonne in Paris, where he studied Philosophy, earning his Master’s degree. Bernard Faucon has received numerous honors for his work, including the 1989 Grand Prix National and the 1991 Prix Leonard De Vinci.
