Biography
Throughout the course of his career in academia and private industry, Dr. Joseph Schlessinger has been a leading figure in cancer research. Currently serving as the founder of Kolltan Pharmaceuticals, Dr. Joseph Schlessinger is the Chairman of the company’s Scientific Advisory Board and a member of the Board of Directors. In addition to Kolltan Pharmaceuticals, Dr. Joseph Schlessinger serves as the Chairman of the Board for Plexxikon, an established leader in small molecule pharmaceuticals. Dr. Joseph also founded SUGEN, Inc., a Silicon Valley biotechnology firm that was acquired by Pfizer, Inc. Beyond his entrepreneurship, Dr. Joseph Schlessinger has been the driving force behind research and discovery into new medicines through a number of prominent academic posts. Currently serving as the William H. Prusoff Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology at the Yale University School of Medicine, Dr. Joseph Schlessinger formerly served as Director of the Skirball Institute for Biomolecular Medicine at New York University. While at NYU, Dr. Schlessinger also served as the Milton and Helen Kimmelman Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology. Before coming to NYU, Dr. Schlessinger was the Ruth and Leonard Simon Professor of Cancer Research in the Department of Immunology at the Weizmann Institute for Science. A widely sought speaker and author, Dr. Joseph Schlessinger has delivered hundreds of lectures throughout the world and has had his work published in over 450 professional scientific journals. For his pioneering work in cancer research, Dr. Joseph Schlessinger has received a number of distinctions including the Sara Leady Prize, the Hestrin Prize, the Levinson Prize, the Ciba-Drew Award, the Antoine Lacassagne Prize, and the Dan David Prize. Professionally, Dr. Joseph Schlessinger maintains affiliations with the National Academy of Science, the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine, the European Academy of Sciences, the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Croatian Academy of Sciences, among several other prominent organizations. Dr. Schlessinger is also an honorary member of the Japanese Biochemical Society.
