Biography

Al Lalani specializes in cancer research and development for the biotechnology industry. He currently serves as Assoc. Director of Translational Medicine at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc, a New York-based biopharmaceutical company that discovers, develops, and commercializes medicines for the treatment of serious medical conditions. Prior to Regeneron, Dr. Lalani was Director of Preclinical & Translational Oncology at Novacea Inc. where he was responsible for all preclinical, translational and biomarker studies related to its two product candidates. Al began his career in the biotechnology industry as a Staff Research Scientist at Cell Genesys Inc. where he was involved in preclinical development of novel immunotherapy and gene therapy strategies for cancer treatment.

In the past decade, Dr. Lalani's scientific interests in tumor biology, angiogenesis, virology and inflammation have been applied in developing innovative therapies for blocking tumor growth and spread. He obtained a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Alberta (Canada) in 1999 where his doctoral dissertation was focused on the identification and characterization of novel viral strategies for evading the host anti-inflammatory response to infection. His post-doctoral fellowship in the area of the AIDS-related malignancy Kaposi’s sarcoma was conducted between 1999-2000 at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and UCSF School of Medicine. Al also holds a Bachelor's of Science (BSc) in Cellular, Molecular & Microbial Biology from the University of Calgary (Canada). His research has been published in over 25 articles in peer-reviewed journals and he has contributed to multiple published and pending patents.
