Interview

An Interview with Matthew Iscoe
Interview conducted on Tuesday, June 21, 2011

What is your favorite quote and what does it mean to you?
Matthew: "Leadership is not a position. Leadership is an action." Some aspire to a title without embracing the work. Leadership is in perpetual motion. There's no time off from leadership; no breaks, pauses, or interruptions. Leadership is difficult. The pressure is always on and you have to keep moving. What I like about the quote is that it is a solid reminder that your influence isn't determined by your branch on the tree but by the effort you put forth.

What was your very first job experience and how did it affect you?
Matthew: My father ran a charter boat when I was young. I learned how to pilot the boat, the gear, safety protocols, and the important fact that the boat always leaves the dock on time. What I really remember is a time I chose NOT to go out on a particular charter. A passenger offered my father a tip - something typically only a mate would accept. My father said, "Well, had Matthew come out you could have given it to him." So, no matter what you know, if you're not there to work, you don't get paid.

What is your favorite color and what do you think it reflects in your personality?
Matthew: Blue. I know blue sounds fairly typical. But blue is diverse. It can be dark and powerful. It can be bright and sharp. A blue gradient sky is magnetic while a solid blue is commanding. Blue is both common and royal. It's the earth's color from space, yet doesn't naturally exist on dry land. Blue takes a long time to figure out, but you recognize it right away.

What is your favorite book and why?
Matthew: "How to Win Friends and Influence People" This is the must-have book for any person who plans on some form of interaction with another human being at some point in life. While it's not easy to always follow the advice in the book, those who do accomplish the most.

Name a couple of organizations that you belong to
