Interview

An Interview with Libby Gudz
Interview conducted on Sunday, July 27, 2008

What is your favorite quote and what does it mean to you?
Libby: "To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment." -Ralph Waldo Emerson This quote practically defines me. Being myself and being proud of the person I am means everything to me.

Name one event that has singlehandedly influenced you most
Libby: That would have to be becoming a mother. It absolutely changes a person. You become strong and delicate at the same time. Your life is all about this miracle you have created. Your entire life certainly changes--your priorities, how you think about yourself and the future, the way you act and react to things. It's AMAZING & the most difficult job in the world, and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

What is the greatest risk you've taken that resulted in failure?
Libby: I don't believe I've had any failures in my life. I think that life creates constant opportunities--choices, decisions to be made, paths you can follow, etc--and if you make a mistake or get off-track, there's always a way to fix it. It's all in how you handle those mistakes that determines the final outome. If you give up, now that's the only way you can fail.

Name two aspects of your career that you are most passionate about
Libby: 1. having the opportunity to create something I love and believe in while still being able to spend most of my time confidently raising two children. 2. creating greeting cards that are beautiful and environmentally friendly

Describe your most significant on the job success in the last five years
Libby: My biggest success has just been having enough confidence in the products I create to go out there and sell them to retail stores. For someone who loves designing and creating, I think that having confidence in your art is sometimes difficult to build at first, and then having to go out into the world and face the possibility of rejection--yikes! It can be a little scary!

Do you love what you do? Why?
Libby: I think it's pretty obvious by now that I love what I do! And I love it because I have the opportunity to do something that I am passionate about.

If you could go back in time, would you do anything differently?
Libby: No, because that could change where I'm at right now, and I would not change anything about my life. I don't really believe in regret.

Do you think that you are successful?
Libby: Yes, I do. I am successful because I love myself and I love my life. I'm successful because I'm happy to be where I am right now and I have no regrets. I'm successful because I see the benefit of all my work.

Despite your success, what do you still find difficult in your career?
Libby: Time management is the most difficult for me. Trying to run a business that I love and raise two children that I love, too, can be very difficult. My first priority is honestly my kids, so sometimes it's hard. I'm an impulsive person by nature, and I never know when I'm going to find inspiration for my cards that I need to act on. Sometimes I get inspired at the most inopportune times!

If you could give the world one piece of advice, what would it be?
Libby: I can't limit it to just 1! First, be who you are, & be proud of yourself. Be a good person, & surround yourself with good people who understand and appreciate you. Find what you love & make it your career. Don't measure your success with material possessions or the size of your bank account. Be happy with the decisions you've made in your life, & if you don't like the way something is, change it.
