Interview

An Interview with Ken Mabe
Interview conducted on Saturday, February 11, 2006

What is your favorite quote and what does it mean to you?
Ken: "The only thing we have to fear is... fear itself." I believe there is great power if facing adversity with determination.

Name one person that has singlehandedly influenced you most
Ken: My father. He had a strong personality, work ethic, and unusual sense of humor.

If there was one person, alive or dead, that you could spend a day with, who would it be? Why?
Ken: Probably Ben Franklin. He was such a great entrepreneur, political leader, inventor, and scientist.

What is your favorite hobby or past time?
Ken: Flying. My wife says she is pretty sure I was a bird in a former life.

If you could see into the future or travel backward in time, which would you choose? Why?
Ken: The 40's. Although there was great turmoil in the world, it was a cool period. P-51’s, Glenn Miller, and Packards.

In high school, what was your favorite subject and why?
Ken: History. I’m not sure how it caught my imagination but it did. I can’t get enough of it.

If you could be anything else, what would you be and why?
Ken: A Pilot. See my hobby comments above.

What was your very first job experience and how did it affect you?
Ken: My first job was bagging groceries when I was fifteen. My most significant early job was working for Mr. Cole who owned the local Exxon station. I’ll never forget how he gave me the keys to the place and the combination to the safe on my first day. I worked hard to make sure I didn’t disappoint him.

What was the most important decision you have ever made in regards to your career?
Ken: I had the opportunity very early in my career to move to "corporate headquarters". At first, I didn't think I was good enough. Having initially turned down the job, I changed my mind. That led to many more promotions and opportunities that I would never have had if I had stuck with my earlier decision.
